Derrick James Holmes, a devoted son, brother, father, and friend, gracefully passed into eternity on Tuesday, August 8th, 2023, at his cherished residence in Daytona Beach, Florida. Born on October 25th, 1978, in his beloved hometown, Derrick's life was a testament to compassion, connection, and a vibrant spirit that touched all who knew him.
Derrick's journey through life was shaped by the loving embrace of his parents, James E. Holmes and Eva P. Walker, and the support of his extended family. His education in the Volusia County school system paved the way for a life rich with experience and purpose. Starting at Turie T. Small Elementary School, he continued his path through Campbell Jr. High School and Spruce Creek Sr. High School, leaving a trail of fond memories and enduring friendships.
Venturing beyond the shores of Daytona Beach, Derrick found his calling as a home health aide during his time in California. His compassionate care for the elderly became a beacon of light for those in need, leaving an indelible mark on their lives. Later, he made his way to San Antonio, Texas, where he continued to spread his kindness until returning to his roots in Florida in November of 2022.
Derrick's passions were as diverse as his life's journey. From playing basketball to passionately cheering for college and NFL football and NBA basketball, he reveled in the excitement of the game. Yet, it was his time spent with his children and family, sharing meals at various restaurants, and connecting with friends across social media that truly defined his joy.
A man of enduring connections, Derrick was known for his ability to bridge the gaps between old and new friends, leaving a lasting imprint on all who crossed his path. His legacy of compassion, warmth, and authenticity will continue to inspire those who were privileged to know him.
Derrick leaves behind a legacy of love that will be cherished by his parents, James E. Holmes and Eva P. Walker, as well as his step-parents, Earline Holmes and Robert Walker. He will forever be remembered by his siblings: Stanley Drains, Wayne Wiley, Stephanie Wiley, Brian J. Holmes, Ramona Holmes, and Judy Holmes. His pride and joy, his sons Landon Ja'ir Holmes and Dayton Joel Holmes, will carry forward his spirit.
Additionally, his memory will be cherished by numerous aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, close friends, and the countless lives he touched throughout his journey.
A memorial service celebrating Derrick's remarkable life will be held at Pinello Funeral Home, 1036 Derbyshire Rd., Daytona Beach, Florida 32117. The viewing will take place on Saturday, September 9th, at 12:00 PM, followed by a heartfelt service at 2:00 PM.
In lieu of flowers.. As we gather to honor his memory, let us remember the vibrant soul who continues to live on in our hearts and stories, forever reminding us of the power of love, connection, and a life well-lived.
