Mr. George Washington Butts began his life journey on July 24, 1939 in Daytona Beach, Florida. He was born the eighth child of 14 to the late Bishop Eddie Butts and the late Mother Jestine Smith Butts. Mr. George Washington Butts was reared in Winter Park, Florida where he started his education in the Orange County Public School System. He attended Hannibal Elementary School in Winter Park, Florida and Hungerford High School in Eatonville, Florida. After his family relocated back to Daytona Beach, Florida he completed his high school education at Campbell High School. After being trained by his father to become a brick mason, he completed the Mary Karl Vocational School and earned a degree in Masonry.
His church affiliations included being an active member of Butts Temple Church of God in Christ, which he helped to build, under the leadership of his late father, Bishop Eddie Butts and under the leadership of his late brother, Dr. Henry L. Butts. In 1997, he joined Evangelistic Family Worship Center (which is now known as New Heart Christian Center) under the leadership of his son, Bishop Dr. George E. Butts, Sr., where he served as the Director of Security and remained a major part of the ministry until his health didn’t allow him to be.
Brother George was an active member in the Daytona Beach community. He was an avid Brick Mason and help to build many homes in the Daytona Beach and surrounding areas. He loved serving as a member of the John H. Dickerson Community Center Senior Oasis. His interest included reading the Bible, attending noon day prayer, going to church, fishing, barbecuing, eating and enjoying family. He befriended many people throughout his years. He was always known for a good time and being the life of the party. He was known by his friends as “Big G”, Daddy Butts, and Uncle George.
Brother George Butts answered his heavenly call on October 28, 2020 at 4:58 p.m. at Halifax Medical Center surrounded by his loved ones. He was preceded in death by his, parents, Bishop Eddie and Mother Jestine Butts; Four brothers, Dr. Eddie Lee Butts, Jessie Butts, Dr. Henry L. Butts, and Jeremiah Butts; Four sisters, Christine Campbell, Hattie Pearl Hardy, Deborah Butts, and Naomi Hughes. The loved ones left to cherish the legacy and love that he shared are the joy of his life, his loving wife of 53 years, Mother Esther King Butts, his son Bishop Dr. George E. Butts(Missionary Cathy) of Palm Coast, FL, Minister Willie D. Butts(Donna) of Apopka, FL, Sophia Williams and Lucretia Ann Brown(Johnny Sr.) all of Daytona Beach, FL and Claretha Butts-Hargrett(Deacon Dennis) of Lauderdale Lakes, FL; Ten grandchildren, Venitra Dukes(Elder Gregory); Ardelia(Elder Horace), Ebony Smith(Philip), George E. Butts, Jr. (Shirma), Alvin R. Payne Jr., William and Lauren Butts, Antwoniek Edwards, Jonyale and Johnny Jr. Brown, all of Daytona Beach, FL; Six great-grandchildren, Kayja, Ja'Caya and Micah Dukes, Maurice (M.J.) and Ashton Smith and George E. Butts, III, all of Daytona Beach, FL; Three sisters, Johnnie Mae Cleveland of Winter Park, FL; Dorcas Butts Morris and Jestine B. Long (Elder Turline) all of Daytona Beach, FL; One brother, Samuel (Lovely) of Daytona Beach, FL; Three sisters-in-law, Gloria Butts of Springfield, NJ, Lue Jean Butts of Orlando, FL, and Willie Mae Butts of Daytona Beach, FL; One Godchild, Kamyra Anderson; Extended family, the Alexanders of West Palm Beach, FL, the Butts family of CA, Palatka, FL, and Utica, NY, the Blackshear’s of Utica, NY, and the Smiths of Miami, FL, the Hawkins, Millers and Golden Family of Daytona Beach, and the King family of Tampa and Lakeland, FL, Pontiac and Auburn Hills, Michigan, Coshocton, Ohio, and Milwaukee, Wisconsin, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousin, and close friends including John Barber, Edward Butts, Jack Morris, Sr. Bishop Willie T. Hargrett and the men of New Heart Christian Center.
Visitation is Friday, November 6, 2020 from 5:00 to 7:00 PM at New Heart Christian Center, 1328 Hurst Street, Daytona Beach, Florida. Because of COVID-19 CDC guidelines will be followed. Mask are required.
The Home Going Celebration will be for the immediate family only because of COVID-19. The service will be Live Streamed on Facebook and Youtube. Mask are required.
