Graveside services are going to be held at Greenwood cemetery on White Street in Daytona Beach on July 5, 2022 at 1 PM. There is a wake following at his granddaughter,Aren‘s house. All are welcome to attend.
Robert was born in Chestnut Hill Pennsylvania to Harry Bickel and Violet Katherine Nale. He had one sibling, Paul who was a year and a half older. He was raised in North Wales Pennsylvania, just outside of Philadelphia. He was drafted in the US Army at the age of 18, which he was initially less than happy about. He often told the story about how he received a letter in the mail that read “you have been selected by your friends and neighbors to serve in the United States Armed Forces”. He jokingly said he wondered “what friends, what neighbors?!” He was sent over to Vietnam during TET offenses, where he proudly served his country from 1967 to 1969. Despite being drafted and sent there during a terrible time, he was grateful for the time he spent in the Army. He always said that he wished that he would have enlisted after his first tour. After being honorably discharged from the military Robert got married and had 4 children, 3 sons and a daughter. He moved to Daytona Beach in 1984. He bought and ran an ice cream franchise on the beach all the way up until his retirement in 2012. He made many friends out on the beach over the years but his true focus was always his family. He taught his children what a great father and all-around good person is supposed to look like. He was always humble and selfless, Forever helping and doing favors for others. He seldom swore, he wouldn’t even tell a white a lie, and he was never judge- mental of people for the current circumstance. His hobbies were his lifelong Love for coin collecting and sports cars, especially Corvettes and Camaros. Robert was predeceased by his parents Harry and Violet, and his brother Paul. He leaves behind his four children James (Elizabeth), Jonathan( Mary), David, and Jennifer (Michael), his five grandchildren, Aren, Ashley, Jacob, Skylar, and Mariah. He also leaves behind his dogs Lucky and Dozer. In lieu of flowers please consider donating to the South East Volusia Humane Society in his honor.
